CREATING YOUR Handcrafted Mokume Gane RiNG
Ordering Your Mokume Gane Ring
Our goal is to make the process of creating your custom Mokume Gane ring or wedding band as enjoyable and memorable as possible. Explore the steps below to learn more about how we work together to create a truly unique Mokume Gane piece.

Step 1 - Gather Inspiration for Your Ring
The process of creating your custom mokume gane ring begins with inspiration. Because every billet is unique, your mokume gane wedding band becomes a one-of-a-kind symbol of your relationship. As such, it's important to explore designs that speak to you and your relationship.
This step is all about finding the type of mokume pattern and texture that resonates with you. Whether you want a bold grain, a subtle line flow, a custom stone, or contrasting precious metals, understanding options helps your mokume gane wedding band feel personal.
Explore our mokume gane options and finishes page to further understand the variety of styles available for selection for your ring. This page also features a gallary of mokume gane rings to further fuel your inspiration!

Step 2 - Select Your Order Style
At Debra Tapian Arts, you can select from two tailored pathways to order your mokume gane ring or wedding band:
Choose A Premade Design
While each mokume gane ring is unique, if you know the style, color and texture you'd like, we can build your ring based on an existing design. Explore the shop for variety of styles and options that you can choose to match closely for the price shown. This option is also best if you're not looking to add a stone.
Commission A Custom Piece (Including Rings with Stones)
See a ring you like but want to tweak it to your tastes or add a custom stone? In this case, we'll work closely together to design a custom mokume gane wedding band. To get started contact me by completing a custom order form, and we'll reach out to begin the process!
No matter if you're choosing a premade design for your mokume gane wedding bands or building a custom piece, it's important to us to ensure your vision is realized. Feel free to contact me with any questions during any step of your decision-making process.

Step 3 - Finalize Your Design & Quote
Once we're in contact, we'll hammer out the final details in order to get your mokume gane wedding band(s) into production!
During this step, we'll be in communication to finalize details including the overall design, finish selections and any stone selections. We'll finalize your quote and begin making your mokume gane ring. In order to secure materials, a 2/3rd's deposit is typically required upfront, with the remaining balance due upon shipment.
This step sets the groundwork for the creative work to make your mokume gane ring truly special. I like to get to know my clients better during this time, understand your relationship what makes your story special. This helps feed inspiration and details into your mokume gane wedding bands.

Step 4 - Building Your Mokume Gane Ring
This is where artistry meets metallurgical mastery. Your mokume gane ring beings by layering, bonding, and forging precious metals under controlled heat and pressure to create your unique mokume billet. No two billets ever share the same pattern.
Each mokume gane wedding band is sculpted, patterned, etched, and detailed by hand. This is where understanding your relationship is so important, as it is the fuel that feeds the creative fire that gets poured into your ring.
Typically, each order takes roughly 4-5 weeks to complete once placed. If you're needing it sooner, please don't hesitate to talk with me and we can plan to get you taken care of!

Step 5 - Delivering Your Mokume Gane Ring
Once your mokume gane wedding band(s) are complete, they will be shipped directly to you so you can enjoy for life. Hearing from my clients at this stage is the best part of the process - Being able to contribute to your love story is an honor I don't take lightly.
We're behind you for 3 months with any sizing adjustments. As is the nature of custom work, sometimes a tweak or two is in order. If this is the case don't hesitate to reach out! For more information, visit our shipping information page.
Being able to create a mokume gane ring that becomes part of your love story is truly an honor, and I'd love to partner with you to create your piece.

"Incredible"
This Mokume Gane ring is INCREDIBLE! I just as hesitant about buying a wedding ring online, but this ring exceeded my expectations by far!!! Very unique wedding band for my soon-to-be hubby and fits perfectly!!! She made it PERFECTLY! Thank you so much for your time in making this.
"Gorgeous Ring"
Absolutely gorgeous ring! Debra was very responsive and worked in a short time frame with me to make a custom band that would fit with my engagement ring. I got it in time for the my wedding and have gotten so many compliments! Definitely recommend!
"Unparalleled"
Debra’s handcrafted work, quality of materials, unique style, and professionalism is unparalleled. I spend months going back and forth with companies large and small, and found not only her work as high of quality but also had more confidence in her than many large jewelers.
"A True Artist"
Thanks to Debra, we have the most beautiful Mokume Gane rings on the planet! All we do is stare at our rings. LOL. We couldn't be happier! Debra not only is a true artist, but extremely patient and helpful selecting the exact stone and custom making our rings to perfection. If they aren't the right size, she'll adjust them at no charge.
"Photos Don't Do It Justice"
So lovely! It felt weird at first not seeing the item in person before purchasing but the ring itself is so nice. Photos really don’t even do it justice! The unique pattern is just so cool. It complements my husband’s skin tone exactly like I’d hoped it would. He didn't see it until the wedding ceremony, we had to pause due to him getting lost in admiration when he first saw. Everyone laughed at that. But obviously he loved it at first sight! I couldn't be happier and hope to get a matching band for myself soon! Thank youuu!!!
Mokume Gane Ring FAQ
Learn more about common questions that arise building a custom mokume gane ring or wedding band. Not seeing answers you're looking for here? Feel free to contact us anytime to discuss any questions you may have.
How do I determine my ring size when custom ordering a Mokume Gane wedding band or ring?
Excellent question! If you do not know your ring size, please let us know during our initial conversations. We can send you a ring sizing kit so you're able to determine the perfect fit prior to the fabrication of your custom mokume gane ring.

What if my ring doesn't fit when it arrives?
As is the nature of custom work, sometimes an adjustment is needed. We're behind you for three months from delivery of your ring for sizing adjustments. If it doesn't fit, simply send it back and we will make the appropriate adjustments.

What finish do you recommended for my Mokume Gane wedding band or ring?
We recommend a satin finish for best show of colors. The high polish has a beauty of its own, but due to the glare off the shiny finish, the color is hard to see. The satin finish is applied with light swiping with a red grade scotchbrite pad (available at Hardwares stores) so you can reapply anytime on your own.

Will my Mokume Gane wedding band or ring be lined?
Yes. Each ring will receive a lining for quality and integrity. This makes the silver act as an accent metal on the surface of the ring, which eliminates most allergy concerns with silver.

How does etching a Mokume Gane ring or wedding band work?
Etching a mokume gane ring can provide incredible texture and depth. All of my combination have a silver layer between the gold layers. This layer can take on a tarnish when exposed to certain elements like sulfur or heavy chlorine. On smooth finishes and lightly etched, any darkening/tarnishing to the silver wipes away easily (a swipe with a scotch brite pad if ever stubborn). Going a little deeper with the etching allows for the true character of the mokume gane. The sterling silver layer is the metal that reacts to the etching process. This lowers the silver layer so it is not as easily rubbed which allows for a more antique look. This means that the deeper the etching, the more the ring will hold a darker tone.

Do I need to custom order a piece?
A limited number of pre-designed pieces are available for purchase through the shop. For true customization, we highly recommend custom ordering your piece. Complete the custom order form to get started. Custom ordering provides the most options and flexibility. Learn more about the ordering process above.
